Makernet: international development by means of the fourth Industrial Revolution

Kurzthese

Makernet is a network of makerspaces that can help developing economies to leapfrog to a new model of production. Many makerspaces already catalyse the creation of small-scale manufacturing businesses around them. With makerspaces co-operating in a network, two additional opportunities present themselves: the deliberate scaling of technologies and business models from one place to another, and the creation of a distributed manufacturing network that could become an essential part of the supply chain for humanitarian and development aid, and ultimately for commercial goods. With the Sustainable Development Goals making inclusive and sustainable industrialization an explicit target, and donors and aid agencies increasingly aware that importing everything they need does nothing to build resilience in the local economy, this feels like an idea whose time has come. At Re:publica the three founding organizations will talk publicly about Makernet for the first time.
