re:member: Michael Bauer (1980 – 2015)

The 10th re:publica is about reflection and sometimes this includes moments of quiet remembrance. We want to remember those members of the re:publica community, who passed before their time.

On 15 September 2015, the news of Michael "Mihi" Bauer's passing swept through the web. He had passed two days earlier, 13 September 2015, at the age of 35.

Mihi was devoted to internet politics and culture and founded CCC Austria, the first Vienna-based hackerspace Metalab and helped establish the Funkfeuer community network. He campaigned against data retention in Austria and kicked off the successful constitutional challenge against the policy. As an ardent idealists, he was also part of the Open Knowledge Foundation team, a developer at SaveTheInternet.eu and a data journalist at Der Standard.

We miss Michael Bauer and his tireless work.
